Title:Contrast-guided Image Interpolation and Super-resolution

Speaker:Professor Kai-Kuang Ma, IEEE Fellow, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

讲座时间地点:7月16日下午16:00,海韵教学楼504

Abstract:

Image interpolation is an essential, and sometimes indispensable, image processing technique encountered in various application domains. With many existing methods that can be found in the open literature, image interpolation continues as an active research area, and it becomes a more crucial technology forthe era of next-generation image display that demands super- or even ultra-high resolution. In our recent research finding, we have shown that a very important attribute, calledimagecontrast, has been completely overlooked in the past. In this talk, we shall share with you why and how this salient attribute can be incorporated into the design of image interpolation process to benefit the interpolated images.Extensive simulation results have indeed shown that the developed novelcontrast-guidedimage interpolation method is clearly superior to other state-of-the-art approaches in all aspects, including much improved image quality, free of noticeable image artifacts, and clear advantage on computational complexity for real-time applications. Furthermore, a relevant topic, called super-resolution, will be also highlighted as they are intimately related this subject and shall be jointly contributing ultra-high resolution image display along the way.

Biography:

Professor Ma received his Ph.D. degree (electrical and computer engineering) from North Carolina State University. He is now Full Professor at School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Prior to his career pursuing in academia,he had about ten years of R&D industrial working experience, first with IBM at USA (about 7 years) and then with Institute of Microelectronics, Singapore, for 3 years. His research interests are in the areas of image processing and computer vision. These include digital image/video coding and standards as well as processing aspects, such asdenoising, super-resolution, enhancement, and so on. His recent interests on computer vision related research involved defense projects, including DARPA, USA, in the areas on Kinect video processing, shape analysis, and fundamental feature-point-based research and applications. Prof. Ma has produced more than one hundred publications in well-known international journals (mainly, IEEE), conferences, and MPEG standardization meetings. He holds one USA patent on the well-known fast motion estimation algorithm, called Diamond Search. He has been actively contributing torelated professional society through various roles, such as serving Associate Editor in IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, IEEE Transactions on Communications, and IEEE Transactions on Multimedia. He is a General Co-Chair of VCIP 2013, Technical Program Co-Chair of ICIP2004, to name a few.

He was serving as Singapore MPEG Chairman, and was elected as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society for 2008-2009. He is an IEEE Fellow for his contributions on “Image Processing and Digital Video Coding Technologies.”
