Inter-carrier Interference Cancellation Techniques for Space-Time OFDM Systems

Abstract
Carrier frequency offset, time variations due to Doppler shift or phase noise lead to a loss in the orthogonality between subcarriers of Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems and results in inter-carrier interference (ICI). Further developing the parallel cancellation (PC) scheme to mitigate the ICI of OFDM systems, we integrate this PC scheme into a space-time (ST) coded system to form a simple space-time parallel cancellation (STPC) scheme. This STPC scheme not only inherits advantages of the conventional PC scheme, such as backward compatibility with the existing OFDM systems, low receiver complexity, and two-branch diversity, but also provides better bit error rate (BER) performance with lower error floor, especially in slow and fast frequency selective fading channels at a high signal-noise-ratio (SNR) without increasing computational load.

Hen-Geul Yeh
Dr. Yeh received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering and a M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, from University of California, Irvine, in 1982 and 1979, respectively, a B.S. degree in Engineering Science, from National Chen Kung University, Taiwan, ROC, in 1978.
He has been with the Electrical Engineering department at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) since 1983, as a Professor since 1986. His research activities have included DSP/Communication/Control algorithms development using MATLAB, and implementation using FPGA and digital signal processors, and smart grids, including optimization and controls, electrical event detection and power line communications. His areas of expertise are real-time Digital Signal Processing, Wi-Fi and Wi-MAX, adaptive systems, and mobile communication in multipath. Dr. Yeh has more than 80 technical publications in the areas of Signal Processing, Communications, and Controls.
